Mountain Biking

Mountain Biking in the Margaret River Region has exploded in popularity in recent years. There are loads of quality trails with the majority being fun winding single track through beautiful native bushland.

Half of the region’s trail networks are very close to the town of Margaret River. The highlights are the Creek Trails and Compartment 10. Both have fast flowing singletrack through gorgeous forest. Compartment 10 has been constructed with machinery and features berms and jumps. The Creek Trails are older and more “natural”. This guide describes six other rides close to town.

Meelup, at the north end of the region besides Dunsborough, is a fun small area not to be missed. Combine it with the nearby Dunsborough Country Club trails for a half day of riding. The Country Club trails teems with kangaroos – a wonderful addition to the ride, especially if you’re an overseas tourist.

Other highlights at the north end of the region are Secret Whitcher and Middle Earth. These are fairly long singletrack trails through Jarrah and Marri forest. Good fun. And especially pretty during spring.

South of Margaret River you’ll find the Boranup Forest Ride. The riding is not quite as much fun as other places in the region but you will be in stunning Karri Forest. Near Nannup, further inland and to the east, the Old Timberline Loop is a fun half day ride.

Most of the mountain biking in the region is not too technical. There’s heaps of singletrack that becomes a lot more difficult the faster you go. This makes most tracks suitable for all levels of rider. Beginners can slow down and more advanced riders can zip quickly by the trees and over the obstacles to get their adrenalin fixes!

Most of the tracks mentioned above are described on this website. A couple aren’t. All the tracks can be found on the free Margaret River Find the Fun App. Download the App and take your phone for a bike ride. The App’s maps are excellent and don’t need the internet to work. If you activate GPS through the App you’ll always be able to navigate the bike route. This is important as many of the mountain biking trails are complex to follow. And having the App is safer as you cannot get lost. It sucks to get lost then get stuck in the bush after dark!
